Adjustable Beds: Who Benefits and Why

The most common reason people move to a motorised adjustable bed isn't comfort — it's being able to get out of bed without help. Bringing the head of the bed up to a seated position turns a difficult roll-and-push into a controlled step down.

For anyone who currently waits for a partner or carer to help, that single change can restore a large amount of daily independence.

Adjustable beds are frequently recommended for arthritis, chronic lower back pain, acid reflux, oedema and swelling in the legs, respiratory conditions, and recovery after hip or knee surgery.

The reason is simple: pressure. Being able to change the angle of your back and legs even slightly redistributes weight, which relieves the pressure points that keep people awake.

An adjustable bed only works with a mattress designed to flex — usually memory foam, latex or a pocket-sprung mattress built for adjustable frames. A traditional sprung mattress will resist the frame and wear out quickly.

Firmness is personal, but if you're prone to pressure sores or have limited movement in bed, ask specifically about pressure-relieving foam.

Check the bed's noise level while moving — you'll be using it at night.

Check whether the frame is available as a dual model, where each side adjusts independently, if you share a bed.
